The National Conference (NC), which boycotted the municipal and panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir last month, has hinted at participating in Assembly polls, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) favoured continuation of Governor's Rule in the state.

"You got control of a handful of towns and cities because NC and PDP stayed away (and Congress did such a poor job of putting up a fight), do you really think we will give you a walkover in the Assembly polls?" tweeted Omar Abdullah, NC vice-president and former chief minister, in response to a statement by BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav who threw the gauntlet to the two major parties, questioning them if they plan to boycott future elections as well.

"They (PDP and NC) say they will boycott elections until the matter of 35A is resolved. On the other hand, they ask to dissolve the Assembly and call for an election. Let me ask you, if there's an election in the near future, will you contest it or boycott it?" Madhav was quoted by a news agency as saying.

Madhav added that the party was in favour of Governor's Rule to continue in Jammu and Kashmir. "Ever since Governor's Rule was imposed in the state, there has been development in all sectors. People are happy. So the party has decided that Governor's Rule should continue for some more time," he said.

Omar appreciated Madhav for clearing the air. "Sensible to clear the air about imminent government formation. There are far too many middlemen and power hungry people trying to convince everyone in J&K that their entry to the secretariat is imminent," he said.
