The sudden change made in the composition of the special task force to probe at least 14 fake encounters in which 22 innocent persons were killed in Gujarat between 2002 and 2006 has jolted the Modi government.

It received severe reprimand from the SC on Friday for appointing former Bombay HC chief justice KR Vyas to do the job though the top court had asked a former apex court judge MB Shah, who heads the STF, to complete the investigation and submit the report in the fake encounters executed by the Modi government.

As the hearing started, a bench of Justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Prakash Desai raised its brows at the government notification delegating the job to a former HC judge. The judges questioned the state why it didn’t consult them before making the change to the probe panel.
