Concerned over increase of opiate trafficking originating from Afghanistan and reaching India in last few months, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has significantly stepped up its engagement with all the states, especially Punjab, and directed its intelligence officers to work in a "more coordinated" way with other federal and state law enforcement agencies.

The NCB, the country's federal drug law enforcement and intelligence agency responsible for fighting drug trafficking, is mainly concerned over a large increase of opiate trafficking originating from Afghanistan which is reaching India through every conceivable route – land, air and sea. "This appears to be a fallout of the bumper production of illicit opium and heroin in Afghanistan during 2017 at 2018," said a senior NCB officer adding "It is estimated that close to 9000 metric tons of opium was produced in Afghanistan during 2017 and this will translate into a potential heroin yield of about 1000 metric tons."

To achieve positive results, the NCB officer said: "Coordination with other agencies like the drug controller and state police is also being maintained to ensure that all aspects of the problem are addressed."

Further, as per direction of the Ministry of Home Affairs, NCB Director General Rakesh Asthana has set up a joint coordination committee for monitoring of the major drug cases in the country. "The mandate of this committee is to monitor all aspects of the major cases, including their linkage to other crimes such as terrorism and money laundering," the officer said.

The concerted and coordinated efforts of NCB has fructified into total seizure of seven kilogramme of Hashish, 133.28 kilogramme of Ganja, eight kilogramme of Heroin, 10,000 Yaba tablets and nine kilogramme between August 16 and August 22 this year.

The agency is closely monitoring southern route for which heroin is trafficked from Afghanistan to other parts of the country, which includes trafficking through Pakistan into India as also the use of the sea route for trafficking into India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Eastern Africa.
