Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has accused BJP of giving "false" assurances to the people and said it should be given a "befitting lesson" for failing to fulfil its election promises.

Addressing a meeting here on Sunday,  the Congress leader hit out at the saffron party for "doing nothing for the welfare of the people and giving false assurances". She asked the people to ensure the victory of party candidate Salman Saeed from Muzaffarnagar constituency.

The former Speaker also hit out at the Samajwadi Party-led state government for being unable to prevent the 2013 Muzaffaranagar riots. P N Punia, chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, who was also present at the meeting, asked the people to keep communal forces at bay in the state.
