Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency polled on April 23 in the third phase. Here is a breakup of how the candidates fared.
TMC's Abu Taher defeated Congress's Abu Hena by 226417 votes.
Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency profile:
Both Congress and Left front would be hoping to do well in Murshidabad as it was one of the two seats which lead to the collapse of their seat-sharing talks in the run-up to Lok Sabha elections.
CPM had nominated incumbent MP Badruddoza Khan from this seat but Congress which won the seat in 2009 and 2004 believed that it has a better chance of winning which lead to the talks imploding. Congress has fielded Abu Hena, who is a former MLA and state minister. CPM won the seat narrowly in 2014 defeating Congress by around 28 thousand votes. In 2016 assembly elections, both parties contested together and they had a lead of over 2 lakh votes here. Since then though, both parties have lost their support base considerably and TMC swept the panchayat polls here. In many places opposition couldn't even give candidates.
In 2019 Lok Sabha election, TMC is aware that it will not get any freeride unlike the Panchayat polls. The party has fielded Abhu Taher, who was a Congress MLA for nearly two decades before leaving the party recently. There is some amount of resentment among the grassroot workers over a turncoat being given ticket. But Mamata Banerjee knows that her party's organisation is not the most strong in Murshidabad district and Abu Taher,a devout Muslim can get the job done in Murshidabad Lok Sabha seat, where 80% population is Muslims. BJP too has fielded a Muslim candidate in former TMC leader Humayun Kabir.
The assembly segments under Murshidabad are Bhagwangola,Raninagar, Murshidabad, Hariharpara, Domkal, Jalangi and Karimpur
The Left has won the seat 8 times and Congress four times. TMC which is traditionally weak in Murshidabad is yet to win the seat ever. It came third, last time but Ahu Taher may just manage to create history when Murshidabad went to polls on 23rd April.
