A group of nearly eight youngsters, out of nowhere, came to the Sarvoday Nagar and Golibar areas of Ghatkopar (W) on Sunday and started unloading heaps of broken bricks and other construction debris from a tempo to fill the potholes. Though it was evident that they did not have any expertise in the job, their commitment towards filling the potholes was commendable.

When asked whether they were sent by ward office, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) or civic contractors, the boys said they had come on the request of their friend, an auto-rickshaw driver. “The auto-rickshaw driver has to go through a harrowing time negotiating the potholes daily. This morning, he asked for our help and we happily relented,” said a youngster while pressing broken pieces of bricks in the pothole.

The auto driver, who requested anonymity, seemed oblivious to the passers-by and concentrated on filling the potholes even as rain continued to pour without respite. Amused at first, residents of the area and citizens passing by later lamented the civic administration's apathy. “What is the point of electing corporators and what is the point of paying tax? We don't want world-class facilities. Even if basic amenities are maintained, the city will, on its own, elevate its position,” said a resident. Another resident said the entire stretch below the Metro railway route was riddled with potholes.
