Mumbai: One child dead, at least 100 children from BMC school hospitalised

At least one child was killed and over 100 admitted to hospital in Mumbai after they fell sick on Friday.

According to early reports, the victim who died has been identified as Chandini Sahil Shaikh of BMC Urdu School Number 1 in Govandi. 100 other children were admitted to Ghatkopar’s Rajawadi Hospital, which is run by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (BMC).

According to the police, the children consumed a tablet, following which many of them fell sick. 

BMC education officer Mahesh Palkar, however, rubbished the claim. Speaking to DNA that the iron tablet was administered every Monday. "The girl was present in school on Wednesday and Thursday. If she was affected because of the tablet, then others would have been affected as well," he said.

Palakr's statements, however, have raised controversy because he has said that others weren't affected. "We cannot say her death has happened due to that iron tablet. I am going to visit the school to find out the exact reason of her death. Providing iron tablet is part of the government programme."
