AHMEDABAD: Lord Ram’s divine intervention could not have come at a more opportune time for the BJP in Gujarat. The Centre’s affidavit in the Supreme Court on the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal project questioning the existence of Ram has given the BJP an ideal opportunity to tickle Hindu sentiments, say analysts.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi promptly launched a personal attack against UPA chief Sonia Gandhi at a public meeting in Mandvi. Modi mocked Gandhi saying she was born on Italian soil and so could not understand Indian religion.

The state BJP unit has already ordered its cadre to light bonfire in all talukas to condemn the Centre’s affidavit following instructions from the BJP high command.

“The Congress is worse than the Mughals who destroyed our temples after acknowledging the existence of our gods. But the Sonia Gandhi-led Congress doesn’t even believe that Ram or Ramayana exist,” said state BJP chief Purushottam Rupala.

Meanwhile, the VHP is planning to launch an agitation from September 27 to force the Centre to scrap the project. “If we had not organised a chakka jam, the Centre would not have retracted their statement about Lord Ram. But they still want to continue with project. If Ram exists, so does the setu. The project has to be scrapped,” said.

Senior VHP leaders met in Delhi on Thursday to draw a strategy for the agitation. “From September 27, we will launch our agitation and it will be akin to the Ayodhya movement, the only difference being that it will be in southern India,” Togadia said.

“We will, however, visit every village to garner support for our agitation and protect Ram Setu,” he added.
