Modi government planning to link Aadhaar card with voter ID? THIS is what Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said

In a significant development, Union Minister Of Law And Justice, Communications And Electronics & Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday (March 18) said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre is considering Election Commission's proposal of linking electoral roll (voter id) with Aadhaar card.

"The Election Commission of India (ECI) has proposed to link the electoral roll with the Aadhaar ecosystem with a view to curbing the menace of multiple enrolment of the same person at different places. This would require amendments in the elections laws. The matter is under the consideration of the Government," Prasad told the Lok Sabha.

Replying to some more questions over this matter, the Union Minister informed the Lower House of Parliament that the Supreme Court is yet to Centre is yet to receive received any instructions from the regarding the issue of linking Aadhaar with Voter ID.

Replying to a query over the manner in which the Government plans to protect the misuse of data linked with Voter ID and Aadhaar card, Prasad said, "The ECI has stated that it has taken multiple measures for the security and the safety of the electoral roll data platform. Electoral roll database system does not enter into the Aadhaar ecosystem and the system is used only for the authentication purpose keeping a tight air-gap between the two systems. These measures effectively prevent theft interception and high jacking of the voter system."

Earlier it was reported that the Centre had responded positively to Election Commission's request to grant legal powers to the constitutional body to resume linking of voter cards with Aadhaar. The Law Ministry, had, however, asked the EC to “enumerate” the safeguards in place to prevent “theft, interception and hijacking” of data.
