Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who will lead BJP in the ensuing assembly elections in Maharashtra, has sent out a strong message that his party's seats will be distributed solely on basis of merit and performance. Making it categorically clear that the sitting legislators may well not take their renomination for granted, he said they could be dropped if they fail to meet the criteria — 100% performance, a five-year track record of organisational work and winnability factor — set up by the party.

"Ab ki baar 220 paar (this time, 220 plus [seats])," Fadnavis declared and set at rest speculation about going solo. He said BJP and Shiv Sena will fight state elections together and asked party cadre not to get trapped into a debate in this regard.

At the party's two-day conclave here, Fadnavis said legislators in particular and party members in general should admit that PM Modi's charisma was the leading factor for BJP and ally, Shiv Sena, to win a record 41 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats. However, he asked legislators not to sit idle or be complacent with the lead they got in their respective assembly segments but further step up outreach with voters for the party to continue its winning streak in the coming assembly election. "Do not take voters for granted. One who does that should know that his descent is imminent," he said.

Fadnavis said though the party goes into poll mode, no works related to common man will get affected, like tackling of drought and farm distress.

Fadnavis said a drought-free Maharashtra, sustainable agriculture, a boost in economic growth, an increase in job creation and a trillion-dollar economy will be his party's agenda once voted to power.

National working president JP Nadda told legislators and MPs at the state executive meeting that their performance with regard to registration of new members and voters in next two months will be monitored as it will be binding on them to daily upload their report on the party's app. "Connect maximum with the people. Think globally, but act locally," Nadda said.

Further, Nadda said the legislators, MPs and workers will have to aggressively take up with voters a number of development and welfare programmes implemented by the Modi government at the Centre and the party-led government in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, the party has rolled out a comprehensive organisational programme between July 25 and September 1 comprising membership and voter registration drive, dialogue with new voters, gathering of booth-level workers, organisation of Raksha Bandhan on August 16 and competition on the occasion of Ganesh festival. As reported by DNA, Fadnavis will embark on his state-wide 'MahaJanadesh' Yatra between August 1 and 31.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Maharashtra’s ruling partners, BJP and Shiv Sena, are currently engaged in making claims for the post of chief minister after the coming assembly elections. Leaders from both the parties are exhorting their respective workers to work in all 288 seats for victory in maximum seats. This is being done with a specific intention to politically eliminate their rivals, Congress and NCP. BJP and Shiv Sena have won 41 of 48 Lok Sabha seats. They should remember that voters may vote differently in assembly elections as witnessed in 1999 when BJP-led government came to power at the Centre but Congress and NCP assumed power in Maharashtra.
