DMK president MK Stalin on Monday urged Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to ask Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to step down after the accused involved in the robbery at late CM J Jayalalithaa's Kodanad estate named him.

"We have a given a memorandum to the Governor regarding the release of a video by journalist Mathew. The Chief Minister has been named and accused of murder. So we sought a special investigation team headed by a police officer in the rank of Inspector General to investigate the case. To conduct a fair probe, the Governor should ask Palaniswami to step down as chief minister," Stalin said after leading his party delegation to meet Governor at Raj Bhavan on Monday evening.

Palaniswami has denied any involvement in the crime and termed the charges as baseless and a political conspiracy against him.

Stalin was referring to a video released by journalist Mathew Samuel on January 11 in which one of the accused in the Kodanad estate robbery alleged that it was carried out at the behest of Chief Minister Palaniswami. In April 2017, months after Jayalalithaa's death, robbers broke into her estate in the Nilgiris after killing the watchman. Subsequently, the main accused in the robbery C Kanagaraj, former drive of Jayalalithaa, and the wife and daughter of the second accused KV Sayan were killed in separate accidents. The CCTV operator at the estate also allegedly committed suicide.

"The Kodanad bungalow was not just a private property. It was used an office by late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Government documents were there," Stalin said.

Stalin said that Governor Purohit had assured appropriate action on the DMK's petition. "If needed, our MPs will meet the President. We will also consider the legal option as well," he said.

On Sunday, Tamil Nadu police arrested the duo – Sayan and Manoj Valayar, the third accused, who appeared in the video released by journalist from New Delhi.
