'The police department has been lackadaisical in its investigation of the threat letters, making it clear that it is not inclined to taking any action because of involvement of Union ministers belonging to DMK,' they said.
AIADMK members of parliament (MPs) wrote to prime minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday, drawing his attention to alleged death threats received by party general secretary J Jayalalithaa.
A copy of the letter written to the prime minister (PM) was released to the media on Monday. The letter, signed by 14 MPs, seeks a CBI probe into the matter.
“The police department has been lackadaisical in its investigation of the threat letters, making it clear that it is not inclined to taking any action because of involvement of Union ministers belonging to DMK,” they said.
“Neither chief minister M Karunanidhi nor Union minister MK Alagiri has denied contents of the letters. In view of the above, we request the prime minister that the case be transferred to CBI,” the MPs said.
Recalling their meeting with PM on September 9 in this regard, they said, “The letters have allegedly come from Madurai-based supporters of Union minister Alagiri and we had requested you to take necessary steps to ensure free and fair investigation of our complaints.”
“For the third time, two threat letters have been received by the Jaya TV office,” they said.
The AIADMK MPs said Alagiri’s “followers” were threatening Jayalalithaa as her government had initiated action against him in the murder case of former DMK minister T Kiruttinan.
“As the threat letters warn not to talk about the murder case, one suspects there is some inner motive governing all these actions,” they said.
The MPs also charged Union telecom minister A Raja with issuing a “veiled” threat to kill Jayalalithaa in the presence of Karunanidhi at a DMK public meeting held at Trichy recently since she was seeking action against him too in the 2G spectrum scam.
