Looking at the ensuing Lok Sabha elections in 2019, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the state government would bear the entire premium of crop insurance for state farmers.

Mamata announced it after an administrative meeting at Mandirabazar in South 24 Parganas district.

“The BJP government pays 20 per cent of premium cost while the state government bears rest of the 80 per cent. They are misrepresenting it in a way to make it look like the Centre is paying the entire amount. So from now onwards we will pay 100 per cent of the premium amount. We don't want any favour from anyone,” she said.

Hitting out at the saffron brigade she said that they were out to drive a wedge between the Hindus and Muslims. “They are murdering Dalits and members of the minority community. They are sometimes describing Hanuman as a Dalit and sometime as a Jat. I urge everyone not to fall for these,” Mamata added.

Peasant leader and former CPI(M) MP Hannan Mollah said that crop insurance will not be of much benefit until the sharecroppers were covered as well. “So far, only those farmers who have land rights are eligible for crop insurance but a huge majority of farmers are sharecroppers and hence are deprived. Unless they are brought under the ambit of crop insurance it will not help large number of peasents,” he said.

BJP national secretary and former party state president Rahul Sinha said that Mamata should first waive farm loans. “Why does she always speak of farmers of other states such as Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh instead of waiving farm loans taken by peasants of Bengal. She should do that first instead of spinning these tales,” Sinha said.
