Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi makes claim in backdrop of lynching cases across country
Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi's refusal to condemn incidents of lynching led to an uproar in a parliamentary panel meeting on minority affairs. At least six MPs walked out after the minister refused to observe a two-minute silence as a mark of respect for those killed by mobs.
Naqvi rejected that there was an atmosphere of fear or insecurity prevailing among the minority community. Suspecting the role of some "hostile forces" behind such incidents, he said such "tactics" will not be allowed to succeed. He, however, stressed that the incidents cannot be justified and pitched for tough action against the perpetrators. "I do not think there is fear or insecurity among minorities. But whatever incidents are taking place, be it small or big, be it a criminal conspiracy, is in no way justified. Action should be taken as per the law against them," Naqvi said after attending the 76th meeting of Central Wakf Council here.
He said the governments of Rajasthan, Haryana and Jharkhand have, without wasting any time, taken action against such people. The minister said the measures the Centre had taken during the last three years of its rule were a reflection of its "empowerment without appeasement" policy, which, he added, has created an "atmosphere of development and trust".
But his refusal to condemn the incidents of lynching led to chaos in the meeting. "In today's meeting, all six MPs, including myself, requested Naqviji to condemn the lynching of an innocent boy, Junaid, and other such incidents.
We also wanted to place it on record in the proceedings of the meeting," JD(U) MP Ali Anwar Ansari said. The members also sought that a two-minute silence be observed during the meeting as a mark of respect for those killed by mobs. However, sources said, Naqvi rejected the MPs' demand as it was "not part of the meeting's agenda".
Ansari, along with other five other MPs — ET Mohammed Basheer from Muslim League, Idris Ali from TMC, Joy Abraham from Kerala Congress, and MI Shanavas and Mausam Noor from Congress — walked out from the meeting of the consultative committee on minority affairs. Ansari said all the victims in these lynching incidents belonged to minority communities and there is nothing wrong in condemning such incidents.
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, MoS, Minority Affairs, has said that recent cases of lynching are the handiwork of ‘hostile forces’. Whatever the case may be, it is now up to the government to clamp down on the perpetrators of such acts, before it is accused of mere lip-service.
