The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) has been brought under the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) following a request made by Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sushma Swaraj in a series of tweets on Thursday stated, "As Minister for External Affairs & Overseas Indian Affairs , I realized that Substantial work of MOIA is done through our missions abroad.Therefore, I proposed to Hon'ble Prime Minister that MOIA should be merged with Ministry of External Affairs. Hon'ble Prime Minister has kindly accepted my proposal. So MOIA will now be part of Ministry of External Affairs," she added.

The MOIA is part of the government of India. The ministry is headed by Foreign Minister Swaraj. It is dedicated to the multitude of Indian nationals settled out of India. Positioned as a Services Ministry, it provides information, partnerships and facilitations for all matters related to Overseas Indians: Non-Resident Indian and Person of Indian Origin.
