The Supreme Court Monday declined urgent hearing on a PIL seeking the registration of FIRs based on allegations of sexual misconduct and assault leveled by women across various sectors, part of what is being referred to as India's #MeToo movement.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice SK Kaul told lawyer ML Sharma, who had filed the petition, that it will come up for hearing in the regular course.

Besides FIRs, the petition also seeks a direction to the National Commission for Women (NCW) to give security and assistance to women who have come out in the open with their allegations.

Last week, Union Minister MJ Akbar had resigned following the #MeToo charges. Days after he refuted all sexual harassment allegations levelled against him as false, fabricated and deeply distressing, Akbar put in her papers on October 17.

The development came after another woman journalist accused him of sexual harassment and 17 women journalists who have worked with 'The Asian Age' newspaper, came out in support of their colleague Priya Ramani.

Many journalists from multiple media platforms have come forward with their stories of harassment against the former minister under the social media campaign '#Metoo' against sexual misconduct.

Meanwhile, actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth extended support to the #MeToo movement, but cautioned against its misuse.
"MeToo is a good movement, but women should not misuse it... MeToo should be used correctly," Rajinikanth told reporters at Chennai airport this morning when asked for his comments on it.

The actor landed at Chennai airport after wrapping up the shoot for his upcoming film Petta in Varanasi.

On the sexual harassment allegation of singer Chinmayi Sripaada against award-winning Tamil lyricist R Vairamuthu, Rajinikanth said the latter had denied the charges. "Vairamuthu has already refuted the allegations, right? He had asked Chinmayi to approach the court and that he was ready to face it," he had said.
