A four-member retired judge panel will conduct a public hearing regarding the cases of sexual harssment by thousands of women on social media.

The committee will look into the legal and institutional framework which is in place for handling complaints of sexual harassment, including some of the complaints if required, and advise the ministry on how to strengthen these frameworks.

Earlier, Maneka Gandhi had said the allegations of sexual harassment against anybody, including ministers, should be taken seriously as women are often scared to speak out.

"There should be an investigation. Men who are in positions of power often do this. And it applies to the media as well as to politics or senior personnel in companies," Gandhi told news channel India Today TV when asked to comment on allegations against a "big" politician.

She said when women have started talking their allegations should be taken seriously.

"Women are scared to speak out because they think people would make fun of them and doubt their character but now when they are speaking out we should take action against each and every allegation," she said.

On Monday, she came out in support of the #MeToo campaign and said she was happy to take up complaints. She has also written to Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to ask for a change in the law to do away with the statute of limitations in child sex abuse cases so that adults who have been subjected to sexual abuse can report their cases as adults.

"I'm very happy that the #MeToo campaign has started. I just hope it won't go out of control in the sense that we target people who have offended us in some way. I think women are responsible enough to not do that. Women are also angry that sexual molestation cases are not dealt with effectively in several places," Gandhi said.
