Mehbooba Mufti, whose Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was in power in Kashmir during 2002-05, when the alleged torture of detainees by security forces took place, sought to steer clear of the allegation.
She claimed the PDP government had inherited a tormented legacy from the National Conference (NC) regime (1996-2002) but made sure people felt free and secure.
“We do not need a certificate from NC. If WikiLeaks looks into the abuses during the NC regime there will be horror stories. And look at what NC is doing now. Over 117 people have been killed, thousands injured. Young boys are being hounded by police. It does not befit them to point fingers. People are our best judges and they know what we have done,” Mehbooba said.
