Meet new Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, super cop who led 26/11 attacks investigation, he has replaced Vivek Phansalkar

Senior IPS officer Deven Bharti has been appointed the new commissioner of Mumbai police, officials said on Wednesday, taking over from Vivek Phansalkar, who retires today. A 1994-batch IPS (Indian Police Service) officer, Bharti is currently the special commissioner of the Mumbai police.

Traditionally held by the ADGP rank, the coveted Mumbai Police Commissioner position has recently been promoted to the DG rank.

Currently serving as the Mumbai police's special commissioner, Bharti was a member of the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1994.  In August, he will be elevated to the position of director general.  In 2028, he is expected to retire.

 Prior to his nomination, Bharti held a number of positions with the city's 50,000-person police department, including deputy commissioner of police (crime), additional commissioner of police (crime), and joint commissioner of police (law and order).

In addition to being the inspector general of police (law and order) at the state police headquarters, he has led the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) during his tenure.

Bharti had previously been on central deputation before to joining the Mumbai police.  In addition, he led the ATS and served as the state's inspector general of police (law and order).

 Bharti is well-known for his investigative abilities and has contributed to numerous high-profile cases, including as the 26/11 Mumbai terror assault, which claimed 166 lives.
