Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, attached to the Safdarjung Hospital, in the National Capital is all set to start its first national-level online integration course from next week. The course, under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, will address 51 public-sector medical colleges across the country.

The Department of Urology at the hospital has been conducting live telecast of surgeries and within a span of six months, the viewers increased from 25 to almost 1,400. This led to the decision to start a course which will have live, unedited for learning.

"The course would help medical students to see the minute details of surgery without any editings. This makes learning more precise as they will see complex surgeries step-by-step. But most importantly, education will reach all through these online classes. The course will include reconstructive procedures and 3-D laparoscopic advanced surgeries of urological cancers," said Dr Anoop Kumar, Professor, and Head, Department of Urology and Renal, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital.

The doctors intend to start live symposiums and live lectures very soon, which will make this course the first fully dedicated online live medical course in the country. The course starts under the government's e-health programme.

The course will focus on tier 2 and tier 3 cities, where the medical colleges do not have structural programmes and do not have laparoscopy as well. Cities like Bhubaneshwar, Patiala, Rohtak, Jodhpur, Srinagar, and Nagpur, will also get live classes.

"The idea is to start capacity building in Tier 2 and 3 cities, so that we can train our doctors in these places, which will directly help the patients from underprivileged background. Our main focus is to help the poor patients in the country and help build a structure that they do not have to travel all the way to Tier 1 cities for surgeries," said Dr Kumar.

In its next class on February 25, Tuesday, the doctor is all set to teach advanced cancer surgery of kidney and prostate through a live surgery.
