A two-member team from Medical Council of India (MCI) on Thursday visited Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College to inspect its facilities to approve increasing of seats in post graduation courses in the college.MCI members M Lakshmi Surya Prabha and N Subba Rao visited faculties in MGM College and associated hospitals to check whether the infrastructure and faculties at the institution are adequate to support more PG students. According to sources, “The MCI members and the college professors discussed about increasing the number of seats in departments of Community Medicine and Surgery.”The team visited Departments of Community Medicine, Surgery on Thursday and the inspection will continue on Friday also. MCI in its earlier round of inspection had pointed out many deficiencies in the college such as infrastructure, number of staff and equipments etc.One of the faculty members said, “Many of the deficiencies pointed out by the MCI in its earlier visit have been rectified and many things are in process, we are in the process of buying new equipment.” Sources said this time number of surgery seats may increase from 12 to 14 and seats in community medicine department may increase from 4 to 9. Since 2010, MCI is frequently visiting the campus and giving its nod to increase the intake by one or two seats at a time in different departments.Students said community medicine department is well equipped to accommodate more students; but, the department of surgery is not up to the mark.
