Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha Election Results 2019: Mayiladuthurai went to polls on April 18 in the second phase of Lok Sabha election 2019 along with 38 other Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu. AIADMK’s Asaimani S and DMK’s Ramalingam were the key candidates in the fray in 2019 polls. The counting of votes took place on May 23. 

Final result: DMK's Ramalingam defeats AIADMK's S Asaimani with a margin of 261314 votes.

Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha constituency profile

Mayiladuthurai comprises of 6 Vidhan Sabha segments out of which only one is reserved for scheduled caste candidates. The constituency is located close to 300 km from the state capital Chennai. 

AIADMK and DMK, the two arch-rivals, entered into an alliance with a number of parties for the forthcoming elections.

AIADMK contested the election in alliance with BJP, PMK, DMDK, Tamil Maanila Congress, Puthia Tamizagam, Puthia Needhi Katchi and NR Congress. Whereas the DMK aligned with Congress, CPI(M), CPI, MDMK, VCK, IUML, KMDK and IJK.  

Tamil Nadu has a total of 39 parliamentary constituencies where 7 of them including Sriperumbudur, Chidambaram, Rasipuram, Pollachi, Perambalur, Tenkasi, and Nagapattinam have been reserved for candidates representing scheduled caste community. However, no seat here has been reserved for Scheduled Tribes. 

Since both AIADMK and DMK aligned with a number of parties for the upcoming elections, the two directly contested against each other in only 8 seats. 

The major contest was held between AIADMK and DMK Candidates.

Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha results in 2014, 2009 and 2004 

2014: RKS Bharathi Mohan of the AIADMK received 513729 votes and he defeated S Ali Hyder of the Mamak who’s secured 236679 votes. Mohan defeated Mamak’s candidate with a margin of more than 2 lakh votes. 

2009: OS Manian of the AIADMK received 364089 votes. He defeated Mani Shankar Aiyar of the Congress who got 327235 votes. 

2004: Mani Shankar Aiyar of the Congress received 411160 votes. He defeated OS Manian of the ADMK who secured 215469 votes. 

The state of Tamil Nadu has 39 parliamentary constituencies out of which seven are reserved for SCs (Sriperumbudur, Chidambaram, Rasipuram, Pollachi, Perambalur, Tenkasi, and Nagapattinam). However, no seat is reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the state.

In 2019, EC had cancelled the election in Vellore constituency after a large sum of cash was allegedly seized from a DMK candidate's office in Vellore, therefore, out of 39, polling took place in 38 Lok Sabha constituencies only.
