Mayawati, known to be a tough taskmaster, has reportedly been compelled to take the unusual step after she faced embarrassment over the wrong doings of two of her ministers, who allegedly siphoned off hundreds of crores from government funds.

Party sources say the BSP chief unveiled the new accountability plan at a meeting of trusted aides, and the party’s divisional and zonal co-ordinators on Monday.

Under the new system, the co-ordinators have been told to report directly to her. Apart from co-ordinators, a group of hand-picked partymen would also report to her about the performance of the ministers.

If Mayawati’s latest plan works out, every move of ministers and top bureaucrats will all be reported to the party supremo by her aides who, party sources say, have been innocuously posted in the offices of the ministers.

A senior party leader told DNA that these reports could be decisive in the distribution of tickets for the coming assembly elections.Mayawati has also deputed some of her cadres to keep an eye on the co-ordinators. At the party meeting on Monday, she sounded warning bells for the erring leaders.

“I am getting reports that some co-ordinators are recommending names of moneyed people (for party tickets) while ignoring dedicated  workers. This will not be tolerated. I know the people who are doing this. So beware, this is your last warning,” she is reported to have said.
