Massive landslide hits Doda killing five, one drowned in flash floods

A massive landslide buried a mud house in Galli-Bhatoli area of tehsil Chilli-Pingal in Bhallessa area of Doda district near a sloping mountain on Monday morning, killing 5 members of a family and sending rescuers scrambling to find survivors after some cell phone calls were received pleading for help.

 In a separate incident body of a middle-aged man was found near a canal who was feared drowned last night.  According to police, the avalanche surged down on the mud house of a tribal Gujjar Bashir Ahmed in the wee hours today, burying the entire structure under heaps of mud and debris resulting in the death of 5 persons including a toddler. SP Bhadarwah Rajinder Singh said that Galli-Bhatoli is a far-off area located on a slope of a hill 20 km from Gandoh."  As soon we received a phone call regarding the incident, a police party along with seluthes of 4RR rushed to the spot and joined locals in rescue operation to retrieve inmates from the huge mound of earth and debris".

  " 5 people of the family are feared to be dead, besides dozens of sheep, 7 buffaloes and a bull also got buried in the debris. As of now 5 bodies including that of the toddler has been retrieved from the damaged structure," SP added saying that in a separate incident body of Chander Prakash (43) was retrieved from village Mandhan of tehsil Gandoh who was believed to be drowned in flash floods triggered by rains yesterday.   The bodies of deceased which were retrieved from the debris have been identified as Bashir Ahmed (25) , Nagina Begum (22) , Zulfi Bano, 5th class student, Mohd Sharief (7) and a 1-yr old girl child. In the past 36 hours, it has rained more than 130mm at Bhadarwah, Doda, Kishtwar and Bhalessa. Banihal Ramban and Batote recorded a rainfall of around 90mm.
