Acting on a tip off, police raided a restaurant in Ghatlodia  and caught one person involved in cheating more than 52 diamond traders of valuables worth Rs2.25 crore, at the Opera House in Mumbai’s Diamond Market. Altogether three people were involved in the duping case.

The arrested has been identified as  Biren Adani, a resident of Tharad village under Banaskantha district, while the other two, Alpesh Vohra and Amit Vohra managed to escape after seeing the police.

The police have handed over Adani to the Mumbai police. Sources said that Adani and the Vohras had defrauded 52 traders of Rs2.25crore from the Opera house. Adani had also incurred a loss of more than Rs40 lakh in shares in January 2008. Later, a complaint was lodged against the trio at the DG Marg police station in Mumbai in July 2008. Since then the Mumbai police were on the lookout for the trio.

Sources said that the Ghatlodia police received information on Monday night that three have been living in Hirabaugh society in Naranpura and were currently dining at a restaurant. The Ghatlodia police rushed to the spot, but on seeing the police, Amit and Alpesh, managed to escape, while the police could successfully arrest Adani. Police inspector of Ghatlodia police station, VH Dindhor said, “Ghatlodia police have arrested Adani but the other two managed to escape.  Adani’s custody has been handed over to the Mumbai police.”  Dindhor also said that Adani and Vohras had been living at the Hirabaugh society in Naranpura for more than nine months.

Sources said that Adani had migrated to Mumbai eight years ago and was doing business with the Vohras.
