“The son had gone on a tour,” says Inspector Arun More, in charge of Dehu road police station, “and an unidentified person broke into the house by bending the metal sheets installed as the roof. The intruder took advantage of her poor eyesight and violated her.”

The woman told her son about the crime when he returned, and he admitted her to Sassoon General hospital for treatment. “The hospital informed us about the incident,” More said. “We have now registered a case of rape against an unidentified person.”

The victim’s home is close to Rupinagar slum area and police suspect the culprit lives there. “The mother and son live alone. We suspect the culprit knew this, and also knew the son was away,” More said.
