A gruesome video of a group of men armed with swords and choppers brutally hacking a man to death in broad daylight on a road in Dhule city, around 280 kms from Mumbai, went viral on Wednesday night. In the video, the men can be seen dragging the victim out of a shop, and raining at least 40 blows with swords and choppers on him, before leaving the spot.

The Dhule police have launched a manhunt for the 11 accused, who they believe to be members of a gang; the attack is suspected to be motivated by gang-rivalry. The police have identified the deceased as 33-year-old Shaikh Rafiuddin Shaikh Shafiuiddin, a notorious gangster in Dhule with 33 cases registered against him.

The attack was caught on a CCTV camera installed on a nearby shop. According to the police, the incident took place at around 6 am on Tuesday at a tea shop in Parola Road in Dhule city, where Shafiuddin had entered for a cup of tea after a morning walk. While he was having tea at the shop, the group barged into the shop, and shot him with country-made revolver.

In the video, Shafiuddin can be seen being dragged out by one of the assailants after being incapacitated by the bullet, following which the other gang members pounce on him with swords, choppers and rods.

At one point, while Shafiuddin is seen lying motionless in a puddle of blood, one of the attackers brings down his sword 23 times on Shafiuddin's neck, before he is dragged away by one of the accused. The accused fled the spot before the police arrived.

Of the 11 attackers, the police have identified seven persons as Vilas Goyar, his sons Vicky Goyar, Shyam Goyar and Vijay Goyar, and their associates Rajendra Devare, Bhima Devare and Dadu Devare.

"We have launched a manhunt for the accused, who are all hardened criminals. We have formed multiple police teams to track them down. A gang comprising members of two families are suspected to be involved in the attack, the Goyar family and the Devare family. Both are considered equally notorious in Dhule, and most of the gang members have at least seven or eight cases against them," said Anil Vadnere, Police Inspector of Dhule City Police Station.

"The deceased, Shafiuddin, was out on bail and has several cases pending against him of extortion, attempt to murder, rape and murder in several districts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. We suspect he was caught in rivalry with the gang that attacked him," Vadnere added.

The police have registered an FIR under IPC sections of murder, criminal conspiracy, breach of peace, criminal intimidation, as well as sections of the Arms Act.
