While responding to yesterday's fervid speech by BJP state president Dilip Ghosh, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said, "Those remarks were meant to shock the populace. Those who newly taste power think they can achieve success by shocking the populace. But we have always fought against this practice. We have always fought while staring the barrel of the gun. How will you shock us?"

The Chief Minister was attending an event organised on the occasion of the foundation day of Trinamool's student wing. There, without directly naming Ghosh, she responded to his speech yesterday that had sparked up a controversy in the state.

West Bengal Police on Tuesday lodged an FIR against BJP state president Dilip Ghosh on charges of propagating hate speech and supporting extrajudicial killings of supporters of the ruling party, Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state.

At a BJP state committee event yesterday at Kolaghat, Ghosh was heard addressing party workers and supporters, "If you are hit by TMC workers, do not come back crying to us. Hit them back. Maintaining law and order is not our duty, the ruling party will worry about that. Just hit them back."

Ghosh had further said, "28,000 cases have been registered against our party workers. There are 307 cases against me, on charges of murder! If I start committing murders, your entire generation will disappear. Without committing any murders, we have won 18 seats. A lot of false cases are being registered against our workers. Remember us, because we don't forget so easily. If we had then Chidambaram wouldn't be in jail. Remember, the government will change in the future."

He added, "We will beat you up till your skin loosens." Asking BJP supporters to band together, Ghosh said, "I am telling you - Be it TMC or TMC's police, you bash them up. The rest is my responsibility." The BJP chief continued his attack on the ruling party and its supporters, saying "After the government changes, we will send you to Jangal Mahal, or to Darjeeling, for the Gorkhas to beat you up. If we start committing murders then there will no one alive to even carry out your last rites."

The unrestrained address on part of the BJP state president has brought in controversies. The ruling party has condemned Ghosh's statement and categorized it as hate speech and an open call to arms asking BJP workers to turn against the state government, particularly the part where Dilip Ghosh asked the supporters gathered at the event to bring down unfettered violence upon the ruling party supporters and even the police.

In response to the FIR lodged against him, Ghosh had said on Tuesday, "It is not really surprising to me, because every time I speak, an FIR is lodged." He dismissed the charges against him saying that lodging unsubstantiated FIRs is all the ruling party can do since they control the police.
