KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday donated Rs ten lakh to the victims of violence in Nandigram from the sale of her paintings.

She claimed that the state government had given a raw deal to the victims including the families of the 14 people who died in police firing in Nandigram last year and there was a need to provide relief to them.

"There is need to maintain peace and development and immediate efforts are needed to build the houses which were damaged during the violence in Nandigram", she said.

Eminent painter Subvaprasanna and theatre personality Bibhas Chakraborty also attended the programme.

Suvaprasanna said out of 160 paintings by Banerjee, 45 were sorted out for display at an exhibition.

Banerjee is known for trying her hand at painting when she takes time off from politics.

The exhibition on the paintings and drawings by Banerjee was held at the Indian Museum premises here last month.
