Mamata Banerjee asks for proof of air strike, receives BJP wrath

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came under scathing attack on Friday for questioning the credibility of the air strike by India on terror facilities deep inside Pakistan on February 26.

"We have the right to know how many people were killed in the air strikes launched by India. Is it 300 or 350? I read in the international media that the bombs landed somewhere else. How many actually perished? Or, did anyone at all?" Banerjee had asked on Thursday.

The remarks ruffled too many feathers. BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said Banerjee comments were very unfortunate. "While the entire country asking for revenge she is asking for proofs of the attacks by India on Pakistan. At a time when we should stand by the country and boost the morale of our forces she is making pro-Pakistan statements. I don't think there is any need to reply to her. People will do that in the forthcoming elections."

Vijayvargiya also referred to the death of IPS officer Gaurav Dutt who had blamed Banerjee in his suicide note. "His wife had contacted me. She is sad and wanted an appointment with Union Home minister Rajnath Singh but given the condition Singh couldn't meet her. I feel an FIR should be registered against Mamata," he added.

Earlier in the day, state BJP president Dilip Ghosh said Banerjee had spoken in the same tone as Pakistan. "It is difficult to find out who she was speaking for," he said.
