Malayalam actor main accused in theft case, says police

Malayalam actor, Vijaykumar, has been identified by police as the main accused in a case relating to theft of Rs 25 lakh in the city, police said.

The actor, who cut his veins while being questioned, is recovering at a hospital here, the sources said.

Assistant commissioner of Police (Thrikkakara), Mohammed Rafeeq, said that since the actor was hospitalised, he had not yet been arrested.He is under police surveillance and would be taken into custody as soon as he is discharged.

Police said five others wanted in connection with the case would also be taken into custody.The plot was hatched by Vijaykumar,who borrowed money from his friend for some business purposes,the sources said.

On the pretext of returning the amount,the actor on Tuesday last sent across rs 25 lakh through his driver when some gangsters, allegedly hired by the actor, sprayed chilly powder on the driver and fled with the bag containing the amount, police said.

The actor's cell phone details have been verified by police and there was evidence allegedly showing that he had links with criminals.The actor has denied he had tried to commit suicide but alleged he had cut his wrist as he was tortured by police during questioning, which Rafeeq refuted.

Cases have been registered against him for attempting to commit suicide and manhandling a police official, Rafeeq said.
