The Ujjain Police on Thursday arrested notorious history-sheeter Vikas Dubey who was on the run for almost a week. The gangster was arrested from the Mahakaal temple in Ujjain, where he was identified by a security guard.

Videos have emerged showing him held by the police. "Main Vikas Dubey hoonn Kanpur wala (I am Vikas Dubey from Kanpur]," he can be heard screaming in the video, apparently to confirm his identity on camera. A police officer then slaps the back of his head, asking him to be quiet.

It is being said that Dubey apparently planned his surrender at the temple and disclosed his identity to the guard who alerted the police. Former UP DGP Arvind Kumar said that the gangster came to Madhya Pradesh to surrender here as the Uttar Pradesh Police was hot on heels and some of his closest associates have already been killed in encounters. Revealing his identity was likely a way to ensure that he remains in the public eye as he feared being killed in an encounter like his associates.

Jain added that the gangster was always two steps ahead of the police as he had good connections in the police department and also had the support of a few political leaders.

On Wednesday, Dubey was in Haryana's Faridabad and managed to escape from his hideout where police nabbed three of his accomplices.

Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan congratulated Ujjain Police on arresting the gangster and said that those who think that Mahakaal will wash off their sins do not know Mahakaal at all. He asserted that the Madhya Pradesh government will not spare criminals at all.

MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra also confirmed Dubey's arrest adding that that two of his accomplices were also arrested with him.

The gangster was arrested almost 150 hours after he and his henchmen ambushed and killed eight Uttar Pradesh policemen on July 3 at his village in Kanpur.

Earlier on Thursday, two close aides of the gangster - Prabhat Mishra and Ranbir alias Babban Shukla were killed by the UP Police in separate encounters.

Vikas Dubey is the main accused in the encounter that took place in Kanpur last week, in which a group of assailants opened fire on a police team, which had gone to arrest him.

Eight police personnel were killed in the raid.
