The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Saturday expelled all its 18 newly-elected corporators in the Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation (AMC) who had voted in favour of the BJP in the mayoral polls. It also removed its Ahmednagar district president from his post for not informing the party about such anti-party activities.

State NCP president Jayant Patil released a statement on Saturday suspending their 18 corporators for defying the party's whip during the mayoral election.

In the mayoral elections, to keep the Shiv Sena out of power in the civic body, NCP MLA Sangram Jagtap and the local NCP leadership helped BJP MLA, Shivaji Kardile to elect the latter's candidate, Babasaheb Wakale. Wakale won the elections despite having merely 14 members in the 68-member AMC. Jagtap is Kardile's son-in-law.

Interestingly, the Sena had the highest number corporators at 24, NCP at 18 while BJP at 14, and the BSP at 4.

"They were served a show cause notice and were asked to present their argument. However, they have not responded so far. Hence, the corporators have been expelled from the party," Patil stated. He further added that the Ahmednagar district NCP president, Manikrao Vidhate had been removed from his post following his failure to inform the state party leadership of anti-party activities. "Vidhate, too, has not responded to the show cause notice," Patil said.

NCP spokesperson, Nawab Malik said, "It's true that due to this decision (expulsion), our party will not have any presence in the civic body. However, no one can hijack the party by defying its whip. Our ideology is more important to us than power. Henceforth, no one will take the party leadership for granted."
