Professor and city academicians were expecting a great hike in the cut off lists because of the soaring high scores this year. However, they remain surprised as their cut-offs have dropped than last year.

The CBSE and ISC Class 12 Results for 2018 also saw a great rise in the number of students who have secured 90% and above scores.

The cut off rates have been in the range from 47% to 85% across all the streams. However, most of the colleges in Thane have seen extremely low cut off percentages this year.

High scores have variably increased the competition for seats in good colleges away from Thane. The desire to be into one of the prestigious college, along with lack of option for courses in the city has compelled the city students to pursue their higher education from Mumbai.

Some city based academicians speculate that the student's increasing interest in integrated courses could be one major reason for the drop in cut-off rates.

“All our cut-off rate across various streams including FYBA, FYBMS, FYBCom, etc is in the range of 47.6 to 70.3 percent. The rise in students’ scores this year seems to have shown a parallel rise in their aspirations to get into popular colleges in Mumbai. This could be the reason for the drop in cut offs in lake city this year,” said an academician at NKT college.

“While the popularity for traditional courses amongst students here seems low, we have seen a tremendous rise in the cut-off rates for our 13 specialty courses like Microbiology, Biotechnology, BSc IT, etc. We pride ourselves for staying on par with the colleges based in Mumbai for the past 50 years, and are glad that we can provide our students with quality education close to home,” said Madhuri Pejawar, principal of BN Bandodkar College.
