NCP's Nawab Malik informed that the Chief Minister's name is being recommended by the Maharashtra Cabinet to "avoid a constitutional crisis".

Since the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections cannot be held due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis in the state, one of the two names that are to be nominated by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari for the vacant seats in the legislative council is going to be Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's.
Nawab Malik, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and veteran minister at the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in the state, on Thursday confirmed this fact and said that the Chief Minister's name is being recommended by the Maharashtra Cabinet to "avoid a constitutional crisis".
"As the MLC elections cannot be held due to COVID-19, it is being done to avoid a constitutional crisis," said Malik after a meeting, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, was concluded.
"According to the constitution the Chief Minister has to become a member of a House within six months of the government formation and there are two seats from Governor quote vacant which are to be nominated by him. Uddhav Thackeray is not a member of any House yet," he added. Maharashtra has a bicameral legislature with both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.
Nawab further informed that Cabinet has also taken a decision to avoid giving media bytes regarding the matter.
162 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Maharashtra on Thursday, taking the state tally to 1,297. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that it will procure as many as 1 lakh Rapid Test Kits for COVID-19 from South Korea.
The municipal body has also marked out 381 containment zones where there is a high risk of spread for the coronavirus.
