Maharashtra police has registered an FIR against NCP leader Dhananjay Munde for allegedly making obscene remarks against his cousin and state minister Pankaja Munde at a recent election rally, an official said on Sunday.

A video that purportedly shows Dhananjay making obscene remarks went viral on social media after which a Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader from Parli in Beed district filed a complaint against him, the official added.

The NCP leader, however, denied the allegations and said that the video clip has been edited. He claimed that the video is fake and his remarks have been distorted.

"Acting on the complaint filed by Parli BJP president Jugal Kishor Lohiya, the FIR was lodged late Saturday night against Dhananjay Munde under Indian Penal Code Sections 500 (defamation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) and 294 (obscene act in public place)," said the police official.

According to a PTI report, the complainant has alleged that the former Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Council made obscene comments against the Maharashtra minister for rural development at a public rally organised at Vida village in Kej tehsil on Thursday.

The BJP has also raised a complaint with the Election Commission and the Women's Commission against Dhananjay.

Mr Munde said the comments were distorted to 'deliberately defame' him as he would never say anything like that for his own sister.

"It is an edited clip, distorts my statement and deliberately defames me. The clip is completely fake and its authenticity must be tested in forensic lab", he added

Those who have 'edited' the video should at least respect the relationship between a brother and a sister, he said.

The cousins are contesting against each other in the Maharashtra Assembly Polls from the Parli constituency in the Marathawada region of Beed. The two fought against each other in 2014 but Dhananjay was defeated.

While Pankaja is the daughter of late BJP stalwart Gopinath Munde, Dhananjay is his nephew.

Maharashtra goes to polls on Monday and the counting is scheduled for October 24.
