One of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, Maharajganj is a BJP stronghold with Pankaj Chaudhary winning from here five times. In the 2014 election, Chaudhary had defeated BSP's Kashi Nath Shukla with a margin of 2.4 lakh votes. He is again up for election and is facing SP's Akhilesh Singh and Congress' Supriya Shrinate. While Singh represented the constituency from 1999 to 2004, Shrinate is the daughter of former MP Harsh Vardhan.

Election Results 2019: BJP's Pankaj Chaudhary scores his sixth victory, defeats  SP's Akhilesh Singh by 3,40,424 votes. 

PANKAJ CHOUDHARY (BJP) - 726349 (59.2%), AKHILESH (SP) - 385925 (31.45%), SUPRIYA SHRINATE (Congress) - 72516 (5.91%)

Constituency profile

Since winning his first election in 1991, Chaudhary has won five of the seven elections. While Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Singh was able to defeat Chaudhary in 1999 and Congress' Harsh Vardhan was able to win the seat in 2009. 

Shrinate is a former journalist who quit her job to join politics. 

Harsh Vardhan had first won from Maharajganj in 1989 on a Janata Dal ticket but won the 2009 election as a Congress ticket.  

Maharajganj Lok Sabha constituency comprises five Vidhan Sabha segments. Pharenda, Nautanwa, Siswa, Maharajganj and Paniyara.

UP is facing a triangular battle between the BJP, the Congress and BSP-SP-RLD alliance. Under the alliance's seat-sharing formula, the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting on 38 Lok Sabha seats of the total 80 seats, Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party on 37 seats and the Chaudhary Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) on three seats. The alliance has left two for Congress' Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli) and Rahul Gandhi (Amethi).
