Mistry’s candidature is being considered mainly because it is believed that the high command does not want to repeat any past president. The other frontrunners, Arjun Modhwadia and Shankersinh Vaghela, have held the position earlier.  Mistry has been very active in spurring tribal development and implementation of the national rural employment guarantee scheme (NREGS). He joined the Congress with Vaghela from the Rashtriya Janata Party (RJP).
