Amid a flurry of exits from Congress in Maharashtra, former Chief Minister and party's state unit president, Ashok Chavan, has threatened to resign over candidate selection in the state.

In an unverified leaked audio clip, Chavan apparently expressed unhappiness over Vinayak Bangade's selection as the candidate of Chandrakupur Lok Sabha seat. The purported conversation took place between Chavan and a Congress worker who claimed that he was promised a ticket from the seat.

Bangade's name was announced by Congress in a list released late last night.

In the purported conversation, Chavan also seemed unhappy with the ticket distribution and said he may also resign from the Congress. Congress has so far announced candidates for 12 seats in the state. The Congress has formed a pre-poll alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the state. Congress will contest on 24 seats, NCP on 20 seats, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi on 1 seat, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana on 2 seats, Yuva Swabhimani Paksha on 1 seat.

Apart from that, Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), three factions of the RPI led by Jogendra Kawade, Rajendra Gavai and Khobragade group, Loktantrik Janata Dal's Kapil Patil, independent MLA Ravi Rana's local outfit in Amravati are some of the smaller parties supporting the Congress-NCP.

Both the parties suffered a setback last week when Sujay, son of Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, and Ranjitsinh, son of NCP MP and former deputy chief minister Vijaysinh Mohite Patil, joined the BJP.

On Friday, NCP's state unit vice president Bharti Pawar and Congress leader Pravin Chheda joined the BJP.
