With the battle-lines for 2019 drawn, Bihar witnesses an interesting exchange of barbs between the “chacha-bhatija” duo - CM Nitish Kumar and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, almost on a daily basis. Nitish and Tejashwi are perhaps the most prominent faces of their respective NDA and Grand Alliance (GA), and hardly finish any political meeting without hitting out at the rival camp.

While Nitish asks voters to press the button for NDA as a payment for his last 13 years’ hard work, Tejashwi doesn’t fail to remind the people about his chacha’s ‘betrayal’ and ‘conspiracy’ against his father.

WHAT CM NITISH KUMAR CLAIMS

  • We have worked with the motto of development with justice for Bihar in the last 13 years. You have seen our work in all sectors and for the uplift of all sections. Our aim is to serve people. The double-engine govt (in Bihar and at the Centre) is important for expedited development of the state.

  • For 15 years, the husband-wife duo (Lalu and Rabri Devi as CMs) looted Bihar and they want to return to power again. But today, when electricity has reached every house in the state, you no longer need to burn lanterns (the party symbol of the RJD).

  • Total prohibition has ushered in a social revolution in Bihar and peace and prosperity are visible in households and villages and towns. We have also spearheaded campaigns against social evils such as dowry and child marriage because social reforms are also an important part of development

TEJASHWI’S COUNTER-CLAIMS

  • Nitish Kumar once said - “mitti mein mil jayenge par BJP se haath nahi milayenge”. Yet, he betrayed the mandate and formed the government with the BJP. He has deceived the people of Bihar in the name of “double-engine growth” but what we see is only a sharp decline in law and order in the state.

  • My family, as well as several other Opposition leaders, have been implicated in false cases. They misused govt institutions to level charges and create trouble for Lalu ji and several other leaders who fight for the poor and deprived sections of the society. Had we sided with BJP, we’d have been in power.

  • Total prohibition is a total failure in Bihar. Bootlegging is rampant and there is even home delivery of liquor in the bigger cities. In fact, the money earned through the illegal trade is going in the ruling party’s coffers.
