Lockdown in Gujarat? Here's what Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has to say

Night curfew is in place in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot from 10 pm to 6 am. The restrictions will be in place till March 31 in the state.

Gujarat has been witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases. As states like Maharashtra, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh have imposed various restrictions in their states, Gujarat as also imposed a slew of COVID-19 protocols and restrictions in place.

But will a lockdown be imposed in the state? Chief Minister Vijay Rupani says no. 

Issuing an appeal asking people not to panic in light of the recent surge in Covid-19 cases, Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani on Saturday (March 20) said that the state government is not considering a statewide lockdown as of yet, reported India Today.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat government on Tuesday (March 16) increased the night curfew timings in four metros to contain the surge in COVID-19 cases.

The night curfew will remain in force in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot from 10 pm to 6 am, an official statement said. The restrictions will be in place till March 31.

This is the sixth extension of the night curfew, which first came into force in November last year after a spurt in Covid cases in these cities post-Diwali. 

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Monday ordered the closu.re of shops after 10 pm in eight wards until further orders. 

"In wake of rising cases of COVID-19, Gujarat's Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation orders closure of shops after 10 pm in eight wards -- Jodhpur, Navrangpura, Bodakdev, Thaltej, Gota, Paldi, Ghatlodia and Maninagar," read a press release. 

Restaurants, malls, showrooms, pan shops, clubs, tea stalls and hair salons will be closed after 10 pm in these eight wards of Ahmedabad.

Gujarat on Friday (March 19) reported 1,415 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total caseload to 2,83,864. With four deaths, one each from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat and Surendranagar, the death toll in the state now stands at 4,437.
