Taking note of several contempt notices being issued to the government for non compliance of court orders, the law ministry is contemplating appraisal of
its law officers and standing counsel.

Sources in the law ministry said the decision was taken as on several occasions the government remained ill informed of court notices with counsels failing to take
appropriate steps.

"There had been occasions when the government is not informed about court directives or decisions. We come to know about it only after contempt notices are issued for non compliance," a source in the law ministry said. He said while the idea was mooted by law minister M Veerappa Moily, the ministry is still working on the appraisal method and the procedures.

"This is part of our effort to strengthen the litigation section of the ministry," the source added. While around a dozen law officers give their views to the government on various issues, over a hundred standing counsel appear in various courts across the country for the government.
