Latur, home to some of the tallest Congress leaders from Maharashtra in the past currently has a BJP MP. It would be unthinkable when Shivraj Patil represented the constituency for 24 years at stretch or when Tulsiram Kamble was in his prime. Alongside Patil, Latur is also the hometown of former CM Vilasrao Deshmukh. After his death, his son Amit has taken up the political mantle.

Parched Latur has seen Fadnavis government arranging special trains caring water to the region. The state government has taken several steps to improve the situation of Marathwada reeling from drought. Latur is one of the worst-hit regions and despite government outreach, hardships exist.

In the last election, Sunil Gaikwad was the runaway winner from this seat, winning it by over 2.5 lakh votes. Still BJP has dropped Gaikwad and has given ticket to businessman Sudhakar Shringare. Contesting against him is Congress candidate Machhindra Kamat. However, more than these two, this is a battle between Guardian Minister of Latur, Sambhaji- Patil Nilangekar and Amit Deshmukh for political domination.

Nilangekar's grand-father Shivajirao is a former CM of the state during Congress regime. With Congress organisation a pale shadow of the past, Sambhaji- Patil Nilangekar is looking to ensure that BJP again wins this seat. Hence, it was no surprise that PM Modi and Uddhav Thackeray did a joint rally in Ausa, Latur canvassing for the Sena- BJP candidates.

The assembly segments under Latur are: Latur Rural,Latur City, Ahmadpur, Udgir, Nilanga and Loha. BJP which has won the grassroot level elections in Latur comfortably in recent past is hoping to build on that momentum. Congress though is not willing to concede without a fight. Latur goes to polls on 18th April
