On Monday, Rajasthan Cricket Association will announce the results of its presidential elections held a fortnight ago. Lalit Modi is tipped to make his dramatic return to Indian cricket. The BCCI will not be happy about it. Or as many officials indicate, its chief N Srinivasan maybe the only one who is none too pleased.

If Modi wins the elections, BCCI politics will take a dramatic turn and Srinivasan’s days will be numbered. Even if he loses, Modi  will loom over cricket politics and it will not be difficult for him to manipulate things or even force a split to oust the Srinivashan camp, which is extremely shaky after the match-fixing and betting episodes.

Former BCCI president and Punjab Cricket Association chief IS Bindra said, “You ask the BCCI why they are so afraid of Lalit Modi. I will write my opinion in my blog in a day or two. Before that, you please go and ask the BCCI top brass why Modi’s entry is dangerous to cricket in India.”

Once the blue-eyed boy of the Indian cricket administration, Modi fell out of favour and was banned for life from the BCCI  last year after he was found guilty of financial irregularities. He is on a self-imposed exile in London after the Enforcement Directorate issued an alert in his name.

Some of the charges levelled against Modi by the BCCI include questionable TV rights deals, a facilitation fee for fixing the deal, rigging deals during the 2010 IPL auctions, forcing some decisions on franchises and trying to start a rival league in England.

Nothing has come of the charges so far. There was also an attempt to get Modi’s passport confiscated, but that also proved unsuccessful, though Modi has not come to India for the last three years.

However, with the BJP sweeping to power in Rajasthan and Vasundhara Raje’s ascent as chief minister, conditions are ripe for Modi to make a comeback. In 2005, Raje formulated the Sports Act that had helped Modi throw out the Rungta clan from RCA in 2005. During the Raje regime, Modi also acted as a financial advisor to the chief minister, and insiders say he used to sit in when multi-crore contracts were finalised. A suite in a well-know five star hotel in Jaipur was Modi’s usual haunt during his glory days. Now those glory days are likely to return.

VA senior  BCCI official said that corruption charges against Modi were so strong that the BCCI banned him for life.”To say that Modi got a go-ahead from Supreme Court for fighting elections in Rajasthan is completely untrue,” the official said.

“He got the Supreme  Court orders when the BCCI was not a party to it. Now, we have decided to approach the honourable court to appraise it of the entire circumstances under which we’re trying to stop him,” said the official.

Most of the officials dna contacted said they do not have anything to do with the issue.

Some even went on to say that it is a personal war between Modi and Srinivasan. Former RCA secretary Sanjay Dixit and former BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale refused to be comment. Most such cricket officials may also be preparing the ground to return to the BCCI,  if Modi gets a foothold.

A top BCCI official, blamed RCA president CP Joshi for not nipping the issue in the bud.

“The RCA president should have banned the district which nominated Modi as its candidate because he was already banned by the BCCI. But even now, things can be handled and we’ll not allow Modi to return to the BCCI under any condition,” said the source.

And that’s what Modi seems to be telling them — to stop him if they can.
