LAHDC election result 2020: BJP's clean sweep in Nubra Valley, wins 10 Ladakh General Council seats

The body has its members as former BJP MP (MP), Thupaston Chawang, Dorjay, Rinpoche Nawang Chamba Stanzin, Head of Thiki Math, and Nawang Rigzin Jora, a former minister. It is demanding constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to Ladakh on the lines of the North-Eastern states.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 10 seats, followed by the Congress and Independents two each out of the 26 seats in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) -Leh elections. The results of 12 other seats are yet to be announced.

"By afternoon, BJP had won 10 seats. After this, Congress and Independents were two each while Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was yet to open its account. Officials said that there are 26 constituencies, and the results of 12 are yet to be announced.

Ghulam Mehdi of BJP won the Turutuk seat by defeating Independent candidate Ghulam Hussain by a margin of 367 votes. Kujang Lotus of BJP won the Hunkar seat by defeating Congress candidate Stanzin Kotar by a margin of 420 votes.

Tracing Angchuk of BJP won the diskette seat by defeating Congress candidate Tsang Riggin by a margin of 570 votes.

BJP's Riggen Lundup won the Tager seat by defeating Congress' Jigmet Stobagis by a margin of 416 votes.

The BJP also won the Panamik and Tangtse seats with a comfortable margin.

However, the Chushul seat was won by Independent candidate Konchok Stanzin, who defeated BJP's Konchok Tsepel by 309 votes.

The BJP also won Kungayam, Korzok, Martselang and Thiksey seats.

Congress captured the Igo and Shakti seats from the BJP and AAP candidates by a margin of 20 and 79 votes, respectively.

The BJP has captured all five seats in Nubra Valley, which has a substantial Muslim population.

The council with 30 seats consists of four nominated members.

BJP and Congress contested all 26 seats, while AAP fielded candidates in 19 seats. In all, 23 candidates were in the fray.

Residents of Leh are demanding constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Charing Dorje, a former BJP minister and former president of the party's Ladakh unit, warned the Center on September 28 that the Apex Body of People's Movement, a neutral body, had been hoodwinked over its long-overdue demands.

The umbrella group consists of political parties and religious organizations and the all-powerful Leh-based Ladakh Buddhist Association.

The security measures will guarantee more teeth to the two hill development councils of Leh and Kargil with legislative powers.

A request was given to a delegation by Union Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah, who later withdrew his call to boycott the council elections.

Following the central government's denial of Ladakh region status to the Union Territory (UT) and other promises made by the ruling BJP during the 2014 parliamentary elections, Chawang resigned from his post and primary membership of the BJP in November 2018.
