In a bizarre incident, a 40-year-old woman, married to a 20-year-old man, punished him for attempting to run away by reportedly cutting off his ears, while he was held at gunpoint by her three sisters. The incident occurred late on Tuesday night at Narkeldanga North Road in north Kolkata wherein Md Tanveer claimed that his wife of two years, Mumtaz Bibi, had cut his ears with a knife.

Tanveer family and area locals said that the two lived in the same locality and got into a relationship around two years ago. However, soon after they got married, she reportedly tortured him and demanded money from his family.

She allegedly also got him to transfer his father's property to her name. Unable to bear the atrocities, Tanveer attempted to flee, but Mumtaz and her associates managed to nab him. "On Monday, I fled to Mullickpore but her people hunted me down and brought me back. Late on Tuesday night, one of her sisters held a pistol to my chest and she with the other two sisters cut my ears to punish me for running away from her place. If I had resisted, they would have shot me," he said.

Assuming him to be dead, they left a bleeding Tanveer and feld. He, however, managed to find his way home where neighbours rushed him to government-run NRS Hospital.

Meanwhile, Tanveer's family members alleged that the police was apathetic to them. "When we took him to Narkeldanga police station, but they refused to take a complaint. It was only after pressure from area locals that a complaint was filed," said one of his family members.

The police, however, brushed aside the allegations and said, "It has happened out of a family dispute. We have registered a complaint and started an inquiry. The accused are absconding."
