Imam of Tipu Sultan Masjid Syed Md Nurur Rahman Barkati — known for his controversial fatwas or religious decrees and closeness to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — was sent a notice of termination from his post on Wednesday by the members of the wakf estate who are the custodian of the property.

“We had been receiving complaints about him from a long time and the apex was reached when he started passing anti-national comments and then issuing fatwas against senior elected leaders of the country. We had been discussing this issue within the committee for sometime and today he has been sent a termination notice with immediate effect,” Arif Ahmed, Chairman, Golam Mohammed Wakf Estate, said.

He said that about seven to 10 days would be given to Barkati to vacate the office which he occupies at present failing which a criminal proceeding might be initiated against him.

“After this, he is free to come to the masjid as any common man to say his prayers but he will not be allowed to lead the prayer from now on,”Ahmed added.

Mutwalli or caretaker of the trustee board, Shahzada Anwar Ali said that Barkati was a mere employee of the estate.
