Kolkata ragging case: West Bengal Human Rights Commission seeks report on Christ Church School events

Concerned with the incidents of death of a Class V student and vandalism at the Christ Church Girls' High School followed by arrest of the school principal, the West Bengal Human Rights Commission today took suo motu cognisance of the incidents and asked the state Home Secretary to file a report within two weeks.

"Very much concerned with the events, the Commission today took suo motu cognisance," WBHRC joint secretary Sujoy Kumar Haldar told PTI here. "Chairman Justice (retd) Ashok Kumar Ganguly has directed the state Home Secretary to get the slew of events enquired by an official not below the rank of additional director general (ADG) of police and submit a report within two weeks," Haldar said.

The enquiry would include the events from the death of student Oindrila Das, vandalism and ransacking of the school and resignation and arrest of school principal Helen Sarkar. The principal has today said at a press conference that she was forced to resign by the police and the mob that had gathered on September 12 at the school and indulged in vandalism. Sarkar, who had been arrested on September 12, was bailed out on September 16.

A number of persons, including some parents of students, have already been arrested for ransacking the school.
