Kids 'confiscated' after mother fails to repay loan in Shillong

In a bizarre incident, a lady was today arrested by the police in Shillong after she "confiscated" two kids as their mother failed to repay a loan.

Rosa Mawrie had lent Rs3.25 lakh to Meryline Gatpoh, a resident of Madanrtning on the outskirts of Shillong, a few months back at the rate of 20%, according to police.

Meryline had paid back Rs1 lakh, but after she failed to repay the remaining amount, Rosa first "impounded" her vehicle, police said.

On September 8, Rosa allegedly picked up Meryline's eight-year-old daughter Preeti from her school, and again on September 15 she took home Gatphoh's 12-year-old son Ismail, they said.

Meryline filed an FIR with police last night, after which the two kids were rescued and the confiscated vehicle seized.

The kids told reporters at the police station that they were made to do household chores like sweeping and cleaning utensils and were even bashed up at times.

"I did this, because I wanted to show her that I was serious about getting back my money," Rosa told police.

Rosa was today arrested and forwarded to the court, DSP (crime) Vivek Syeim said.
