For the fourth straight day, Kerala on Friday logged over 20,000 cases of COVID-19. Kerala logged 20,772 COVID cases and 116 deaths from coronavirus. The high test positivity rate (TPR) in Kerala stands at 13.61 percent.

This comes as weekend lockdown in the southern state comes in effect from today. Pinarayi Vijayan government in Kerala has imposed a complete lockdown in the state for the weekend, July 31 and August 1, to check the spread of coronavirus.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) sent a six-member team to Kerala to hold discussions with district authorities and examine the possible reasons that triggered cases in the state in the last few days. The team will aid the state’s ongoing efforts in COVID management.

“There are many concerns, and rise in positivity rate is one. Cases are declining everywhere and transmission is continuing in Kerala. We need to discuss this with the state. It’s a comprehensive situation,” NCDC director Dr SK Singh said Thiruvananthapuram on Friday night.

Kerala's COVID caseload reached 33,70,137 on Friday, while the death toll stands at 16,701.

There are currently 1,60,824 active cases of COVID-19 in the state.

Malappuram, Kozhikode, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kottayam are the worst-hit districts in Kerala as daily COVID cases continue to remain above 20,000.
